What is Sedation Dentistry?
If you’ve ever gotten anxious about visiting the dentist, you’re not alone. Thirty to forty million Americans put off necessary dental appointments due to dental anxiety, and this can have a serious negative impact on your oral health, and your happiness. At Plano Smiles, you don’t have to let this anxiety keep you from getting the treatment you need. Our practice offers sedation dentistry such as conscious sedation to patients who experience anxiety so that they can feel relaxed and comfortable during their appointments and get the work done they need to maintain their oral health. Dental sedation patients are fully conscious and can answer questions and react, but reach a level of calm and relaxation that allows them to enjoy their dental visit. Patients who use sedation dentistry often report that they don’t remember the dental visit after it’s over and leave with a beautiful smile. They get a chance to enjoy their dental visit and improve their oral health easily and effectively with sedation dentistry. At our practice, Dr. Yeary offers both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a kind of gas that can be inhaled when a patient comes in for an appointment. Nitrous oxide keeps patients feeling calm and relaxed during every procedure. It is a tried and true dental sedation method that is completely safe and effective. The effects of the nitrous oxide last throughout the procedure, but wear off quickly afterward.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a type of dental sedation that is administered to patients via a small tablet. Before they come to the office for their procedure, they will be given a tablet to take for their sedation once they arrive at our office, within an hour the effects of the oral conscious sedation will kick in and help the patient feel completely relaxed and comfortable. Because the tablet takes longer to wear off than the nitrous oxide, a loved one will have to drive you to and from the dentist for your appointment.
